SUMMARY:Using Integrated Capital to Build Community Wealth and Power
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nIf we wish to address the growing wealth gap and ecological challenges of our times\, we need to create the opportunity for communities to own and control their future. That means circulating investment dollars locally\, transforming the governance structures that allocate capital so people most affected have the most say\, and designing investment approaches that make wise use of blended capital — integrating debt\, equity and grantmaking. This requires a whole systems approach to place-based change\, engaging all the stakeholders – entrepreneurs\, investors\, philanthropy\, anchor institutions\, policymakers\, professional service providers and community members–in building sustainable\, resilient\, and inclusive local economies.  \nIt also requires a willingness on the part of investors and philanthropists to challenge their current understanding of risk and return. In conventional finance\, investors try to transmute risk into return. Practitioners of solidarity finance redefine risk and transmute it into impact and power. \nIn this live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes Deborah Frieze\, founder and president of Boston Impact Initiative and a Professor of the Practice at Tufts University’s Department of Urban Environmental Policy and Planning\, for a discussion of how to deploy integrated capital to build community wealth and power. \nFeatured Guest\nDeborah FriezeDeborah Frieze is a professor\, author\, entrepreneur and activist. She teaches impact investing at Tufts University’s Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning. In 2013\, she founded the Boston Impact Initiative\, an impact investing fund working to close the racial wealth divide in Eastern Massachusetts. The fund takes an integrated capital approach\, combining investing\, lending and giving to build a resilient and inclusive local economy. Deborah is co-author (with Margaret Wheatley) of Walk Out Walk On\, an award-winning book that profiles pioneering leaders who walked out of organizations failing to contribute to the common good—and walked on to build resilient communities. She is also founder of the Old Oak Dojo\, an urban learning center in Boston\, MA. \nHost\nLaurie Lane-ZuckerLaurie Lane-Zucker is Founder and CEO of Impact Entrepreneur\, PBC\, an impact economy business that hosts the Impact Entrepreneur Network — a large\, global network of “systems-minded” entrepreneurs\, investors\, and scholars of social and environmental innovation — and editor and publisher of Impact Entrepreneur\, a digital magazine covering the emerging Impact Economy. For over 30 years\, Laurie has been a “pioneer” (Forbes) and recognized leader in sustainability\, social enterprise\, and impact investing. Laurie was the founding Executive Director of the international environmental organization\, Orion Society\, which publishes the celebrated Orion Magazine\, as well as the founder of a global sustainability think-tank\, the Triad Institute\, and Hotfrog\, a Founding B Corporation\, GIIRS Pioneer Company\, and the first company ever to complete an equity transaction on an impact investment exchange. Laurie is the bestselling and multiple award-winning publisher and editor of books and magazines on sustainability and social impact — having worked with such acclaimed authors as Wendell Berry\, Barry Lopez\, Terry Tempest Williams\, and David James Duncan — and the author of numerous articles on entrepreneurship and impact investing. Laurie is contributing author to the academic textbook from World Scientific\, Sustainability: Business and Investment Implications. His new book\, The Impact Entrepreneur Breakthrough: A Field Manual for the Regenerative Economy\, will be pubished by Berrett-Koehler in 2026\, with global distribution by Penguin Random House.

SUMMARY:Building an Entrepreneur-centric Impact Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nParticipants in the impact ecosystem — accelerators\, investors\, corporates\, higher education\, and other interested parties — all strive to support impact entrepreneurs according to their own unique strategies. Unfortunately\, these collective efforts can be mystifying and even counterproductive for the very entrepreneurs we seek to support. \nA better approach entails working together to evolve an ecosystem that offers a seamless continuum of technical support\, networks\, and capital to accompany entrepreneurs throughout their journeys. Collective solutions must overcome the capital mismatch between supply and demand\, ensure diversity and inclusion in the enterprises we support\, prioritize impact measurement and management\, and bridge partnerships with corporations and universities. \nIn this live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes social impact pioneer and global development leader Brigit Helms of Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship for an in-depth conversation about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to centering impact entrepreneurs. Spoiler alert: It’s about connecting the dots rather than strengthening silos. \nFeatured Guest\nBrigit HelmsBrigit Helms is Executive Director\, Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship\, the premier university-based social enterprise accelerator dedicated to eliminating poverty. For 30 years\, Helms has created and delivered solutions to social and environmental challenges in 45 countries across Africa\, Asia and Latin America\, in both the private and public sectors. SUMMARY:Donor Advised Funds: Capital for Impact Ventures and Funds
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is with both befuddlement and a sense of optimism that we approach the topic of investing in impact-oriented ventures and funds through donor advised funds (DAFs). Befuddlement in that DAFs aren’t adopting the use case more widely or as quickly as they might. Optimism in that the opportunity DAFs present for the field of impact entrepreneurs is exciting and opens up a new avenue for funding. \n— From Donor Advised Funds: Sources of Capital for Impact Ventures and Funds by Tim Freundlich and Tracy Sherman\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Tim Freundlich\, co-author of the IE Magazine article\, Donor Advised Funds: Sources of Capital for Impact Ventures and Funds \nImpact Entrepreneur's 2023 season of live programs launches with a Deep Dive conversation with the Founder and Executive Director of Strategic Development for ImpactAssets\, a pioneering organization championing the use of donor advised funds in the impact space. We will be discussing the recent article in Impact Entrepreneur Magazine that Tim and his colleague Tracy Sherman wrote on how donor advised funds are an exciting (and underutilized) source of capital for impact enterprises and investment funds. \n\n\nAbout Our Deep Dives\nDeep Dives are hour-long Zoom Meetings: Live Q&A Sessions (as opposed to our Zoom Webinars\, where the audience is in View-Only Mode) between the author(s) or subjects of a Magazine article and our members and readers. Be sure to read the article in question and come bearing questions! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nTim FreundlichTim Freundlich is an innovator of financial instruments for impact investing. Over the last 25 years\, he served 12 at Calvert Impact Capital\, helping to build the $500+ million Calvert Community Investment Note (more than $2 billion cumulatively invested into hundreds of nonprofits and for profits globally). While there\, he conceived of and launched the prototype of the ImpactAssets Donor Advised Fund – now a $2.2B impact investment-based DAF that was spun out as ImpactAssets in 2010\, which he founded and serves as executive director\, strategic development. Additionally\, he co-founded Good Capital and its Social Enterprise Expansion Fund LP\, as well as the SOCAP Conference. He received a BA from Wesleyan University with a major in Film\, an Executive MBA from the University of San Francisco\, and lives in the Greater Boston Area with his partner in life Julie\, and sons\, Milo and Gus (and a small dog named Russell).

SUMMARY:Building a Vibrant Impact Ecosystem with Jim Sorenson
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nBuilding a Vibrant Impact Ecosystem with Jim Sorenson \nBuilding a robust impact investment market requires establishing a healthy\, supportive ecosystem. Impact investors\, just like conventional investors\, depend on the work of researchers\, advisors\, wealth managers\, entrepreneurs\, industry experts\, and others to make well-informed\, successful investments. Moving from a single bottom line to triple bottom line set of priorities\, however\, requires embracing additional complexities and utilizing creative problem-solving\, especially around such challenges as impact measurement. \nSuccessfully growing early-stage impact enterprises necessitates a similar level of comfort with complexity and creative experimentation. Strategic pivots and unorthodox funding strategies are often the norm for impact entrepreneurs and their businesses. \nIn this live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes one of the founding voices of the impact investing movement\, Jim Sorenson\, founder of the Sorenson Impact Group\, for a far-ranging conversation about impact investing\, impact entrepreneurship\, and impact field-building. \nFeatured Guest\nJim SorensonJim Sorenson is a global impact leader\, and one of the founding voices in the impact investment movement. Since the start of his career\, first as an entrepreneur and then as an investor\, Jim has focused on mission-driven investments that prioritize profit and purpose. \nThe son of a self-made billionaire and entrepreneur\, Jim grew up surrounded by innovation and business. When it came time to launch his own career Jim went off on his own before returning to the family business. In 2002\, he was about to fundraise for one of those businesses\, Sorenson Media\, when the dot.com bust derailed those plans\, forcing Jim and his team back to the drawing board. \nOut of that crisis Sorenson Communications was born\, a technology business that provides communications services for the deaf community. Sorenson Communications soon became the world’s largest employer of the deaf. In 2005\, the business was spun out and sold in what was the largest private equity deal in Utah to date. \nHis experience with Sorenson Communications opened Jim’s eyes to the real meaning of profit and purpose. Deaf educators estimate that the services provided by Sorenson Communications have increased employment for the hearing-impaired fourfold. \nIn June\, Jim launched Sorenson Impact Group (SIG) as a multi-faceted center for impact investing\, to advance the field of impact investing\, drive capital to impact investing\, institutionalize\, and scale the sector. At the Sorenson Impact summit\, also in June\, SIG announced that it was taking over the operations of SOCAP\, the cornerstone impact investing conference\, now in its 15th year. \nJim strongly believes that to solve the biggest challenges facing our society the impact ecosystem must align through a more holistic approach to impact investing\, with a focus on actionable results at scale. SUMMARY:Moral Imagination\, Patient Capital\, and Their Roles in Solving Big Problems
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToo many who yearn to make a difference become paralyzed by the fear of leaping without having worked out every detail. Yet the decision we face is not to chart the perfect way forward; it is simply to embark on the journey. In her latest book\, Manifesto for a Moral Revolution\, Jacqueline Novogratz\, founder and CEO of Acumen\, outlines concrete practices we can all use to jumpstart our own impact on the world. Change is possible\, she argues\, and because it’s possible\, it’s up to each of us to be part of that change.  \nThe critical ingredient for large-scale\, sustainable progress lies in moral imagination — which starts by viewing other people’s problems as if they were your own\, and discerning how to solve those problems. It requires both the audacity to see where you want to go\, and the humility to realize the scale of what we’re facing. In this intimate conversation and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes Jacqueline Novogratz\, who will share her story of quitting her banking job to start a business in Rwanda\, which ultimately led to founding Acumen 21 years ago and forging the path for a now-thriving impact investing industry. She’ll explain the role of patient capital in building markets and solving the problems of poverty\, and the role that listening\, immersion\, and transcending our tendencies toward binary thinking plays in building dignity for all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nJacqueline NovogratzJacqueline Novogratz is the Founder and CEO of Acumen\, and a recognized leader and innovator in the social impact sector. Her work began in 1986 when she quit her job on Wall Street to co-found Rwanda’s first microfinance institution\, Duterimbere; the experience inspired her to write the bestselling book The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor\, and\, in 2001\, launch Acumen. \nA pioneer of impact investing\, Acumen has invested more than $146 million of patient capital into 151 companies affecting the lives of nearly 400 million people across Africa\, Latin America\, South Asia and the United States in the areas of clean energy\, agriculture\, healthcare\, and education.  Acumen also has launched four for-profit funds\, including KawiSafi\, a nearly $70 million impact fund focused on off-grid solar energy in East Africa\, and ARAF\, a first-of-its-kind $58 million fund focused on helping smallholder farmers mitigate the impacts of climate change. \nHer second book\, Manifesto for a Moral Revolution: Practices to Build a Better World\, was named one of the top 10 social entrepreneurship books of all time. A recognized leader in the issue of poverty and the importance of dignity\, Jacqueline has been named one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy\, one of the 25 Smartest People of the Decade by the Daily Beast\, and one of the world’s 100 Greatest Living Business Minds by Forbes. She lives in New York with her husband. \n\n\nHost\n\n\nLaurie Lane-ZuckerLaurie Lane-Zucker is Founder and CEO of Impact Entrepreneur\, PBC\, an impact economy business that hosts the Impact Entrepreneur Network — a large\, global network of “systems-minded” entrepreneurs\, investors\, and scholars of social and environmental innovation — and editor and publisher of Impact Entrepreneur\, a digital magazine covering the emerging Impact Economy. SUMMARY:Closing the Disability Wealth Gap Through Venture Investment
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClosing the Disability Wealth Gap Through Venture Investment with Regina “Gina” Kline \nThe disabled population currently experiences crisis-level unemployment and a lack of capital investing in early-stage solutions. According to the United Nations\, 1.5 billion people globally live with disabilities\, which is almost 20 percent of the world’s population. Nearly two-thirds of the world’s working-age persons with disabilities (PWD) are not employed. All in all\, it is estimated that the global GDP loses approximately $1.9 trillion annually due to exclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace. \nThe investment case for investing in innovation at the nexus of disability and tech could not be stronger\, yet the disability market is massively underserved and undercapitalized. There are more than 2.5 billion people who would benefit from assistive products. People with disabilities alongside their friends and family control over $13 trillion in global disposable income. The US assistive tech market will be valued at $26 billion by 2024. SUMMARY:What is Resilience?
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Resilience? \nIn her Impact Entrepreneur interview with resilience experts Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy and David Dodd\, IE correspondent Allison Lee writes: \n“In Stewart’s experience\, people often tend to fall into a disaster risk-reduction view of resilience. For him\, though\, it’s about more than survival or adaptation; it’s about thriving. He takes a systems-view of resilience. Whether it’s island or city resilience work\, he looks at the system itself\, and the entirety of the ‘organism’ that surrounds the community — whether that is individuals\, families\, businesses\, government\, etc. Resilience is the characteristic that enables the system to survive\, adapt\, and thrive in the face of multiple shocks and stresses. \nFor David Dodd\, it’s the ability of people to cope with stresses on their environment\, and more importantly\, bounce back after a disturbance of any kind happens. This includes not only natural disasters\, but also man-made ones — acts of terror\, conflict\, and economic turmoil. David has been through economic cycles that have been devastating to people and feels that those cycles can be as much of a disaster as a Category Five hurricane. David’s catchphrase is ‘transformative recovery’\, which is a new paradigm in recovery. He wants to transform the economy to make it more resilient\, robust\, and wealth-generating for the location and its people." \nIn this Impact Entrepreneur Deep Dive\, we welcome Stewart Sarkoczy-Banoczy and David Dodd\, along with IE correspondent Allison Lee\, for a discussion of resilience and how it relates to economic development and the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. \n\n\nAbout Our Deep Dives\nDeep Dives are hour-long Zoom Meetings: Live Q&A Sessions (as opposed to our Zoom Webinars\, where the audience is in View-Only Mode) between the author(s) and/or subjects of a Magazine article and our members. SUMMARY:Innovating New Financing Solutions to Advance the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinance is not working for people or the planet. We need to act to change this. \nThere is a significant gap between this growing awareness and tangible actions that will result in better outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the annual SDG financing gap to $3.7 trillion in 2020\, up from $2.5 trillion in 2019 (OECD) – a drop in the ocean compared to the claimed ESG investment universe. It is certain that in the current landscape of small\, separate sustainable finance initiatives\, often focused in high- and middle-income countries\, we will not deliver the change at scale needed across the financial system globally. A transformational shift in how we think about capital\, the role of capital in society\, and the private sector is needed. \nIn this special fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes the Director of UNDP’s Sustainable Finance Hub\, Marcos Neto\, to discuss the innovative instruments for attracting and disbursing significantly greater amounts of impact capital and exponentially growing the business/finance sector’s social and environmental impact. \nWe will discuss\, among other topics: \n\nA new normal where enterprises’ role moves from maximizing profits to maximizing economic\, social\, and environmental impacts or\, to put it even more ambitiously\, our collective human and planetary wellbeing\nInstruments that enable businesses and investors to continue to be profitable and become more equitable economic models fit for the future\nUNDP’s relationship to countries and the private sector in this journey\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nMarcos NetoMarcos Athias Neto joined UNDP in February 2013 and has since led UNDP’s global work on private sector development and foundations\, first at UNDP’s headquarters in New York and then\, from November 2014\, as head of the Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (IICPSD). In April 2019\, Marcos returned to New York to lead the establishment and management of UNDP’s new Finance Sector Hub. \nMarcos led the development of UNDP’s new private sector strategy and its offers on SDG Finance. He co-chairs the executive boards of the Business Call To Action and the Connecting Business Initiative. Apart from his role at UNDP\, Marcos also serves on the Supervisory Boards of CARE International and the Museum of Tomorrow International. \nOver the past 25 years\, Marcos has been a leader in sustainable development\, poverty eradication and multi-stakeholder partnership building. He is a passionate advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals. Prior to joining UNDP\, Marcos spent 17 years at CARE International. During his tenure at CARE International\, Marcos served in numerous roles including Regional Manager for Asia and Latin America at CARE UK\, Executive Director of CARE Brasil\, and Program Director in Central America. \nMarcos has lived and worked in Central and South America\, Europe and the United States and has also worked in Asia\, Middle East and Africa. He is a lawyer by training\, with a Master of Laws from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. Marcos is married and has two children. When it comes to investors\, the urgency of the moment necessitates greater understanding\, pushing and growing in how they approach advancing racial equity and economic justice. They will provide insights into how investors can consider power\, risk\, and justice in their impact measurement and management work. \nPANELISTS \nMahlet Getachew\, Managing Director of Corporate Racial Equity at PolicyLink\, works to ignite the racial equity movement more broadly and deeply within corporate America. What is intriguing is how\, with all the data we have and the visual of 2020 where we saw previously “invisible” talent taking on critical and essential roles\, the world has not broadly embraced a full-potential-of-all-talent operating model.\n— From "The Impact of Diversity on the Global Economy" by Patience Marime-Ball and Ruth Shaber\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Patience Marime-Ball and Ruth Shaber\, co-authors of the IE Magazine article\, The Impact of Diversity on the Global Economy. The article is adapted from the authors’ forthcoming book\, The XX Edge: Unlocking Higher Returns and Lower Risk\, to be published by Worth Books / Forefront Books on June 21\, 2022. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this book benefits Women of the World Endowment and Tara Health Foundation. \n\n\nAbout Our Deep Dives\nDeep Dives are hour-long Zoom Meetings: Live Q&A Sessions (as opposed to our Zoom Webinars\, where the audience is in View-Only Mode) between the author(s) or subjects of a Magazine article and our members. Be sure to read the article in question and come bearing questions! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guests\n\n\nPatience Marime-Ball\n\n\n\nPatience Marime-Ball has more than two and a half decades of investment experience across capital markets and is widely recognized for using the levers of finance to innovate pathways for creating a more equal world. SUMMARY:The Resilience Imperative
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Resilience Imperative: Innovating and Investing Like Our Future Depends on It \nToday\, there are many important global issues\, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and COVID\, which vie for our attention. But we cannot afford to take our eyes off the threat of global warming. Everything that we know and love depends on collective climate action. \nClimate-related disasters\, spurred on by rising emissions\, are growing in frequency\, severity\, and scale\, reaching ominous and unprecedented proportions around the world. Epic disasters\, damages\, and losses will define the 21st century unless we invest in climate resilience - now. Yet\, one of the biggest challenges we face is how to make our communities more resilient. Real resilience is based in coordinated community action that is backed by data and analytics. To get there\, we need investment in climate resilience efforts that will prepare society and the economy to respond and recover from the effects of climate change. \nToday\, efforts to increase resilience in communities are fragmented\, especially so in frontline communities and contested environments. This lack of integration and information coordination across the various actors and agents necessary to stabilize communities is exacerbated by 1) a failure to address the communities’ inability to properly absorb capital (both human and financial)\, and 2) by a lack of innovation in exploring ways to invest more appropriately in the vanguard communities that bear the first and worst of climate change. \nIn this live webinar and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes Green Jobs Machine co-founder & CEO Sharron McPherson to discuss the resilience imperative and how impact investors and entrepreneurs can effectively tackle the biggest social and environmental challenge of the century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nSharron McPhersonA reformed investment banker and Wall Street attorney\, Sharron McPherson is the Co-Founder and CEO of The Green Jobs Machine\, a resilience tech company committed to helping communities globally thrive in adverse climate conditions. SUMMARY:Faith-based Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have arrived at a ”Golden Age” of responsible investing — a time when even the world’s largest private equity investors are “among ESG’s most enthusiastic boosters”. Unfortunately\, while the enthusiasm for solutions that require limited or no financial sacrifice\, or perhaps\, even better\, deliver “impact alpha\,” are at an all-time high\, there seems to be a profound disconnect between the intensity of the rhetoric and the relative lack of interest we see in the corners of the “impact-first” universe that may require one to accept more modest\, “concessionary” financial returns. The answer to a search for impact-first peers might be found in religions. Faith-based investors represent trillions of global assets under management (AuM) and have a long history as pioneers in responsible investing.\n— From Faith and the Future of Impact Investing by Christian Kingombe\n\n\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with IE Correspondent Christian Kingombe\, author of the IE Magazine article Faith and the Future of Impact Investing\, and three expert practiioners in the field of faith-based investing — Nicoleta Acatinei\, Guillaume d'Alançon\, and Xavier Heude. \nNicoleta Acatrinei is an economist and started her career in banking. The reality of the business world forced her to inquire about the relevance of the assumption of the egoistic nature of homo oeconomicus. This research question became the cornerstone of her academic trajectory covering fields as theology\, anthropology\, moral decision making and work psychology. She received her Ph.D. in 2014 from Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP)\, Switzerland\, entitled Work motivation and pro-social behavior in the delivery of public services: theoretical and empirical insights (free download\, published in 2016\, Switzerland). She had been principal investigator and co-principal investigator of research projects on faith at work at Princeton University. She has been developing research and gave conferences on topics such as sustainable entrepreneurship\, impact investing\, Faith-based impact investing\, sustainable development\, etc. She has authored books\, book chapters and journal articles\, including: Saint John Chrysostom and Homo oeconomicus (2008); Let’s talk about money\, let’s talk about human nature (2007); The determinants of work motivation in the delivery of public services: the case of the Swiss education sector (2015); and Perspectives of Saint John Chrysostom for the VUCA world. An integrative mindfulness program to cope with managerial challenges in a VUCA world. \nGuillaume d'Alançon is married and the father of five children. After two years in human resources and six years in civil service responsible for culture and relations with the population\, he spent eleven years leading a diocesan office in France. A frequent commentator and author on ethical and social issues\, he has appeared in print\, radio and television. In 2015\, he founded LIFE-Europe\, an association which connects professionals and volunteers to families and individuals facing difficulties through a network of family orientation centers\, the “Accueil Louis et Zélie.” He joined Aliter Invest in 2019. \nXavier Heude used to work in the banking industry for almost 20 years until he decided to leave and co-found BACKBONE\, a company specializing in the origination of SME-financing oportunities in developing and emerging countries. The intention is to contribute to protect human dignity through the financial support to SMEs that provide essential products and services to the population in need. Investment focus is : food\, education\, medical care and social inclusion. \nChristian Kingombe attended Roman-Catholic primary and secondary schools before completing his BSc.\, MSc. and PHD in economics. He is Managing Partner of the 4IP Group LLC\, an Impact Investing Advisory Boutique\, which he co-founded in 2017 after working for a number of International Organizations\, Think Tanks\, and the African Development Bank. He is also the GP of a Tech Impact VCF named Invisible Heart Ventures based on ethical principles. SUMMARY:Investing in Locally-led Rural Resilience with Willy Foote
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlobally\, 2.5 billion people rely on smallholder agriculture for their livelihoods. Farming families lack access to critical resources like business knowledge\, market connections\, and financing. Fortunately\, there's a solution. Agricultural enterprises are engines of impact in rural communities\, connecting farmers with higher prices on the international market and helping them tackle some of their most dire challenges: gender inequity\, youth unemployment\, cycles of poverty\, and the impacts of climate change. But these enterprises are unserved by financial institutions. They fall into the "missing middle" of agricultural finance — too big for microfinance yet too small for a commercial bank. \nIn 1999\, Willy Foote founded Root Capital to close that rural financing gap and unlock impact in their communities. Root Capital leverages blended finance to extend credit to these enterprises while building their business and agronomic knowledge so that they can build their long-term resilience. \nIn this live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes Willy Foote to discuss the story of Root Capital and how to use catalytic capital to drive impact in rural communities. Over the conversation\, we'll learn about: \n\nRoot Capital's novel triangulated payment model that allows them to make loans that other financial institutions don't\nThe lessons learned over the past twenty years as they've moved from focusing on bankability to building the long-term resilience of their clients; and\nHow agricultural enterprises are uniquely positioned to promote gender equity\, include young people\, and unlock grassroots climate action in rural communities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nWilly FooteWilly Foote is founder and CEO of Root Capital\, a nonprofit that offers farmers around the world a pathway to prosperity by investing in agricultural businesses that serve as engines of impact in their communities. Since 1999\, Root Capital has provided more than $1.6 billion in loans to 740 agricultural businesses in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America reaching 2.3 million smallholder farmers and over 10 million people in rural communities. \nFoote is a Skoll Entrepreneur and an Ashoka Global Fellow. He was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2008\, one of Forbes’  “Impact 30” in 2011\, was a 2012 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute\, and was the 2020 Northeast Honoree for the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) Global Impact Awards. He served for nearly a decade on the Executive Committee of the Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE)\, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and YPO\, and serves on the Strategic Advisory Council of the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan. Foote holds an MS in development economics from the London School of Economics and a BA from Yale University. SUMMARY:Restoring Degraded Land in Africa for Profit with Luni Libes

Restoring that land to productive use and nature is a huge endeavor. Groups like AFR100 (the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative) have organized efforts toward land restoration. That organization alone has rallied countries across Africa to pledge to restore over 100 million hectares (over 220 million acres) of land in Africa by 2030. Accomplishing that goal is too much for philanthropists and governments to do alone\, and that is why AFR100 isn’t tackling this challenge in the traditional manner\, but instead has included impact investing and for-profit solutions alongside grants and funding for NGOs.\n— From Restoring Degraded Land in Africa for Profit by Luni Libes\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Luni Libes\, Founder of Realize Impact and Africa Eats\, and author of the IE Magazine article Restoring Degraded Land in Africa for Profit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nLuni LibesLuni Libes is a 29+ year serial entrepreneur and investor\, most recently: Fledge\, a global network of impact-oriented accelerators; Africa Eats\, a pan-African holding company focused on feeding Africa; Realize Impact\, a public charity making it easy for anyone to make an impact investment; and The Angel Accelerator\, teaching early-stage impact investing. SUMMARY:How Investing in Women Artisans Can Catalyze India’s Economy

It is still intentionally undercounted in metrics of growth\, sustainability\, and GDP. It is within this context we write about India’s 200 million strong artisan economy\, 90% of which operates squarely within the informal landscape. Despite this\, or perhaps because of this informality\, unlike many other sectors\, we see over 50% participation of women — no small feat in a world where the gender dynamics remain deeply skewed in favour of men.\n— From How Investing in Women Artisans Can Catalyze India's Economy\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Priya Krishnamoorthy and Aparna Subramanyam\, authors of the IE Magazine article How Investing in Women Artisans Can Catalyze India's Economy \n\n\nAbout Our Deep Dives\nDeep Dives are hour-long Zoom Meetings: Live Q&A Sessions (as opposed to our Zoom Webinars\, where the audience is in View-Only Mode) between the author(s) or subjects of a Magazine article and our members. Be sure to read the article in question and come bearing questions! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nPriya KrishnamoorthyPriya Krishnamoorthy is an award-winning broadcast journalist\, arts manager and creative impact strategist passionate about bringing creativity/culture in conversation with sustainable development. In response\, a number of social enterprises are stepping up to provide localized solutions to specific communities’ water-related issues.\n— From Climate Change and Water: Working to Change the Story One Social Enterprise at a Time by Brigit Helms\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Miller Center CEO Brigit Helms\, author of the IE Magazine article Climate Change and Water: Working to Change the Story One Social Enterprise at a Time and three of the entrepreneurs profiled in the article\, Sanjay Banka\, Lisa Heederik\, and Galen Welsch. \nSanjay Banka is Executive Chairman of Banka BioLoo Limited\, and a strong propagator of SDG 6\, the water and sanitation Goal. Now\, the company also provides fecal sludge treatment plants and packaged sewage treatment plants. All the solutions are environmentally-friendly\, and have circularity at heart with outputs as reusable water and biosolids\, both enhancing agriculture yield. Well-versed with development and humanitarian problems\, primarily issues related to water and sanitation\, he puts his best foot forward in helping provide sustainable water\, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) solutions to households\, school children\, workers and many other user groups\, with a focus on the marginalized and vulnerable sections of the society\, helping eradicate open defecation\, generally\, and affordable waste treatment. Sanjay is a prolific writer and speaker\, and has authored many a piece on sustainable WaSH\, as also spoken extensively\, including at the UN. SUMMARY:Natural Asset Companies (NACs)
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatural Asset Companies (NACs) are a potential game-changer on a global scale. NACs will be newly formed\, sustainable enterprises that hold the rights to the productivity and health of natural assets like land or marine areas. They are a new asset class on the New York Stock Exchange enabling owners to convert nature’s value into financial capital\, using that capital to re-invest in the natural assets to protect them or improve their sustainable use. In this way\, we could see huge areas of biodiversity and agricultural land around the world saved and regenerated. Early signs suggest a great deal of interest from investors looking for impact at scale\, and the timing\, with ESG and COP26 front of mind\, may be perfect.\n....Douglas Eger\, businessman\, entrepreneur\, and conservationist is the Chair and CEO of Intrinsic Exchange Group (IEG)\, the company that works with natural asset owners to form and list the new asset class of NACs. The IEG has put forward a transformational solution that rejects the assumption that nature is only a cost\, by creating investable assets that provide financial capital for sustainable production from those natural assets.\n— From "Natural Asset Companies (NACs): A New Way to Invest in our Planet" by IE Magazine Correspondent David Stead\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Douglas Eger\, profiled CEO in the IE Magazine article Natural Asset Companies (NACs) A New Way to Invest in our Planet. SUMMARY:Regenerative Finance Is No Longer the Future — It Has Arrived
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur complex system problems are proving resistant to simple solutions\, and each one has its own web of complexities to unwind. One thing they all have in common\, though\, is that you can’t fix a broken [name any system] with a broken finance system. That’s why regenerative finance — a concept that’s been percolating at the edges of impact investing and sustainable business since at least 2015\, when John Fullerton laid out the principles of regenerative economics — is emerging as an essential strategy. \n\n\n\n\nSimply put\, regenerative finance uses money as a tool to solve systemic problems and regenerate communities and natural environments. Its goal is to heal and create shared value. Profits are not the end\, but rather a means to further progress. In regenerative finance\, circulation replaces accumulation. \n\n\n—  From Regenerative Finance is No Longer the Future — It Has Arrived\n  \nJoin us for a Deep Dive with RSF Social Finance's Jasper van Brakel\, author of the IE Magazine article Regenerative Finance is No Longer the Future — It Has Arrived. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nJasper van BrakelJasper van Brakel is CEO of RSF Social Finance\, a lending\, giving and investing innovator based in San Francisco. @RSFSocFinance. SUMMARY:Investing in Nature Through the Public Equity Markets
DESCRIPTION:Impact Entrepreneur\n\nWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBusinesses directly impact biodiversity through their operations and supply chains. According to the World Economic Forum\, three socio-economic production and consumption systems — food\, infrastructure\, and energy — are responsible for the largest pressures on biodiversity. In fact\, approximately 80% of threatened and near-threatened species are currently endangered by these three systems with the impacts from food\, land\, and ocean use posing by far the greatest biodiversity threat. Accordingly\, those companies that recognize the biodiversity-related risks to their companies and our planet\, and actively work to transform their business models to support the regeneration of nature\, can provide compelling investment opportunities for capital market participants. Through investment in solution-oriented companies operating in these three socio-economic systems\, investors can help transform individual industries\, build a more robust global economy and\, ultimately\, ensure the vitality of our planet.\n— From Investing in Nature Through the Public Equity Markets\nJoin us for a Deep Dive with Vicki Benjamin\, Andrew Niebler and Robert Clapham\, authors of the IE Magazine article Investing in Nature Through the Public Equity Markets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Guest\n\n\nVicki BenjaminVicki Benjamin is a co-founder of the Adviser and has been its Chief Executive Officer since it commenced operations as an investment adviser in 2018. Attention is primarily given to investing in climate mitigation (renewable energy) and resilient infrastructure for adaptation. SUMMARY:Activating Impact Investors at Scale to Achieve the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nAccording to the United Nations\, “between $3.3-4.5 trillion per year needs to be mobilized if we hope to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Much of that funding needs to go to efficiently capitalizing impactful\, entrepreneurial business solutions. There are growing numbers of entrepreneurship centers and accelerators devoted to impact entrepreneurship\, yet there are relatively few centers and accelerators focused on nurturing and activating new impact investors. \nHow do we create an effective infrastructure to welcome and activate the thousands of high-net-worth individuals\, hundred thousand foundations\, four thousand family offices\, and thousands of corporations that are primed to become impact investors? What are the most efficient and effective ways to engage\, educate\, and activate them? \nIn this live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes Stephanie Gripne\, founder and CEO of the Impact Finance Center\, for a discussion of how to activate impact investors at scale and best direct their capital to early-stage impact enterprises. \nFeatured Guest\nStephanie GripneStephanie Gripne founded Impact Finance Center to develop the groundwork for a model that identifies\, educates\, and activates said investors. Investor Clubs create a marketplace for these investors to discover investment opportunities that align with their values. In addition to these clubs\, the Impact Investing Institute was founded as an Ed Tech platform to bring the idea of Full Spectrum Capital to a broader audience\, no matter what their needs are. Lauded by Forbes as “the Steve Jobs of impact investing”\, Stephanie is continuously innovating Impact Finance Center’s model\, which empowers asset owners to become the philanthropists and impact investors they dare to be. Early evaluation efforts of her work indicate that 300 direct impact investments totaling over $500M have been completed. SUMMARY:Reimagining Identity and Power in the Impact Economy
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nIn a recent Impact Entrepreneur Magazine article\, Toni Johnson asserts that “Democracies and their supporting institutions are bleeding faith in themselves. But they can be revitalized. We can finish out the first half of this century by working to renew faith in each other.” \nWhat does it mean to seek a common story and define the common good to build a sustainable and equitable future when the partisan media and social media abound with divisiveness\, and antagonism and mistrust sit between relatives at the Thanksgiving table? \nHow do we collectively stand against injustices and build an impact economy that works for every woman and man and for the more-than-human world when individuals and institutions with wealth and power focus immense resources at keeping us separate and weak? These are not easy questions\, and the answers are often even more challenging. \nIn this Deep Dive conversation with members\, Impact Entrepreneur welcomes journalist Toni Johnson to discuss how we can reimagine how we show up and share power more equitably as we work together to construct an impact economy. \nAbout Our Deep Dives\nDeep Dives are hour-long Zoom Meetings: Live Q&A Sessions (as opposed to our Zoom Webinars\, where the audience is in View-Only Mode) between the author(s) or subjects of a Magazine article and our members. Be sure to read the article in question and come bearing questions! \nFeatured Guest\nToni JohnsonToni Johnson is CEO and founder of Mission OutLoud\, which uses creative communications strategy and content to unleash clients’ voices and cut through the noise. SUMMARY:Impact Investing at the Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Impact EntrepreneurWednesday\, August 26\, 20268:31 PM - 8:31 PM\n\n\nIn his recent Impact Entrepreneur Magazine article\, Impact Investing Needs Better Returns to be Sustainable\, growth equity investor Clemens Feil argues that\, “the key issue is that lower returns decrease the attractiveness of the impact investing industry. Over time\, commercial interest in it will wane\, reducing the available capital\, and thus creating a vicious cycle that makes it harder for local entrepreneurs to build businesses and create prosperity. Therefore\, the highest priority for emerging markets impact investors must be to improve returns.” \nIn contrast\, impact investor and author (Adventure Finance) Aunnie Patton Power\, in an Impact Entrepreneur webinar\, asserts that “private equity is not correct for 99% of impact enterprises”\, in part due to the gulf separating the expectations between equity investors and impact enterprises. She proposes a range of more attractive\, patient\, and\, at times\, “concessionary” options\, including\, in a recent IE Magazine article\, Revenue-based Financing. \nHow should one balance these two visions? Or are they incompatible with each other? If so\, what does it mean for the future of impact investing and the funding of impact enterprises? In this Impact Entrepreneur live fireside chat and audience Q&A\, Impact Entrepreneur’s Laurie Lane-Zucker welcomes IE Magazine authors Clemens Feil and Aunnie Patton Power to discuss their contrasting perspectives on impact investing and financing impact enterprises. \nFeatured Guests\nClemens FeilClemens Feil is a growth equity investment professional at the largest global development finance institution focused on the private sector in developing countries.
