Building an Impact Economy in Georgia
Connecting Georgia’s social enterprises to markets and capital
News shared with Impact Entrepreneur by Cameron Neil of LendForGood
LendForGood, an impact loan syndication platform built in Australia, has passed A$4 million in private capital mobilized for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). By its own count, the platform had mobilized A$4,186,875 (Australian dollars) through 57 successful loan campaigns for 30 enterprises in Australia, Africa, Asia and Latin America when it announced the milestone this month. Its first loan went out in January 2022.
The model relies on intermediaries. Accelerators, venture studios, entrepreneur-support organizations and impact angel networks put forward enterprises they have vetted and endorsed; individual and institutional lenders then fund each loan together, and LendForGood handles the contracting and payment flows. Its lender community numbers about 200, half of them women, and 26 percent of its borrowers are women-owned and led.
Two returning borrowers carried the total past A$4 million. Both had raised and fully repaid earlier loans on the platform. Vivaldi raised capital to convert a Colombian Navy helicopter into a fully certified aeromedical search-and-rescue and medical evacuation unit for maritime emergencies in remote regions. Dash Electric came back to expand its fleet of electric delivery vehicles in Indonesia, where its riders move from renting an e-bike to owning it within 24 months.
Other loans, the company says, have backed enterprises that improve access to menstrual products for women and girls in Indonesia, tackle child and maternal malnutrition in Cambodia, serve locally sourced and made meals to students in Nepal, and work to reduce armed conflict in trouble spots around the world.
“We see people and organisations coming together in solidarity to invest in hope, to make the world better in ways they could not do alone,” said Cameron Neil, LendForGood’s co-founder and CEO.
LendForGood describes its lenders as a bridge across the “missing middle” in impact finance, the gap that leaves many impact MSMEs stranded between microfinance and institutional investment. In an article for OnImpact, Neil tied the milestone to two global trends from GSG Impact’s work that Impact Investing Australia recently set out: a shift toward market building, and the mobilization of private capital for MSMEs. He writes that LendForGood aims to grow from millions to tens of millions of dollars deployed a year, partly by partnering with wholesale funds and foundations.
LendForGood is a joint venture between Red Hat Impact and StartSomeGood. It was named Impact Market Builder of the Year at the 2022 Australian Impact Investment Awards.
