Building an Impact Economy in Georgia
Connecting Georgia’s social enterprises to markets and capital
Announcement from Anthropic, October 18, 2026
Anthropic, the public benefit corporation that makes Claude, announced on October 18 that it is committing a portion of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity it wholly owns. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic’s shares are committed at the outset. The board may then add 2% for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline, so the Fund’s stake can grow with the company.
Most of its mission work, Anthropic says, happens inside the company: research on AI safety and interpretability, applied biomedical research, and discounts on Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions. That work carries both public benefit and for-profit value, so it stays in house. The Fund is meant to add flexibility and scale. Anthropic names large donations to traditional nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations as two possibilities it might explore.
Labor markets are the example it offers. AI may generate enormous economic value, the company writes, and could also cause instability for many workers. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to its Economic Futures Research Fund, which pays for outside research on ways to prepare society for AI’s economic effects, and it says the pace of AI progress may call for bolder approaches.
The Fund is a limited liability company. Anthropic chose that form over a 501(c)(3) or another structure to keep room to move between forms of giving, and it says none of the Anthropic equity the LLC holds will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the United States or abroad.
Anthropic sets the design beside a common practice at technology companies, escalating compensation awards for executives. “We are instead directing that equity to the public benefit,” the announcement says.
The Fund builds on earlier commitments. Anthropic’s co-founders pledged at its founding to donate 80% of their equity holdings, and about half of its employees take part in an equity donation match program, in which Anthropic matches the equity employees pledge. With the Fund, Anthropic puts the share of the company dedicated to the public good at roughly 20%, plus any percentage the valuation milestones add.
In the coming months, Anthropic says, it will share more about the Fund’s structure and governance, including the valuation milestones that may add to its stake, and it will report on its progress against its mission in an upcoming public benefit report.
