Can the New SDG Standard Change Business Decisions?
Whose evidence counts
Announcement from Social Finance, October 27, 2026
Social Finance has launched the Local News Impact Investment Fund, which will make impact-first investments in local news organizations around the United States. It opens with an initial $21 million, including commitments from its two anchor funders, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and funding from Press Forward, Social Finance and other partners.
Northwestern University’s 2025 State of Local News report counts some 50 million Americans with limited or no access to local news. Social Finance argues that traditional lenders and investors have mostly withdrawn from local news, which they now regard as high-risk.
“When people have access to local news, they are more connected and more engaged in their communities, but philanthropy alone cannot meet the scale of the challenge facing local news organizations,” said Amalie Nash, vice president for journalism at Knight Foundation.
The fund will invest through debt and equity, with most deals between $500,000 and $2 million. Independent newsrooms qualify whether they are for-profit or nonprofit, provided they know their market and audience and are building a sustainable business model with a credible path to revenue growth and profitability.
The capital is meant to modernize newsrooms’ platforms and to test new sources of revenue, such as digital advertising, live events, membership pricing and targeted newsletters. Newsrooms can also use it to expand into new places and news topics.
Social Finance will manage the fund through its registered investment adviser, SF Advisers, LLC. Its team will source and underwrite the deals and coach the newsrooms that receive capital, and it will track each investee’s financial health alongside its reach and engagement, with particular attention to communities that have the least access to local news. According to the announcement, the fund is designed to work alongside grantmaking and, over time, to open the door to broader pools of investment capital.
Axios reported that MacArthur’s commitment is its first investment in local news through its impact investing program, after a long history of grants. The money comes from the foundation’s $750 million pool of catalytic capital. Axios also noted Knight’s recent $5 million impact investment in Village Media, a Canadian local news company.
