The 90-10 Institute Launches Summit Initiative to Address Systemic Causes of High Costs and Low Productivity in BioMedical Industry

Berkeley CA October 7, 2024 – The 90-10 Institute announced it has received a generous grant to support its mission to transform the biotech industry by creating a new sector focused on the 90% of human diseases that remain unaddressed by the current healthcare system. Our approach is to establish new guiding principles and innovative financing structures that are not designed to compete with or disrupt the legacy pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.

“The 90-10 Institute, founded by industry experts – biotech entrepreneurs, scientists, business executives – is taking an inside/out approach by recognizing that medicines have become a tool for generating wealth, which is opposite from the original intent of the molecular biology revolution in medicine. We who have been makers in that industry want to create ground breaking health outcomes using capital as a tool” says Dr Barbara Handelin, founder and CEO of The 90-10 Institute.

“We need ‘blue ocean thinking’ to address the vast sea of unmet medical needs. Our goal is not to dismantle existing companies but to enable a host of re-envisioned companies to focus on innovative solutions to medical problems.  Those who actually do the work to produce new medicines know that high prices are falsely justified with inflated R&D costs. The recent passage of legislation enabling/requiring Medicare to negotiate on drug prices has resulted in immediate threats from industry CEOs to further reduce their productivity.  This creates an even wider field of opportunity for good old fashioned business competition to jump in with sensible business models and economically aligned investments where profits will flow from lowering costs, increasing efficiencies and healthy competition”, remarked Handelin.

The 90-10 Summit 2025 will happen at the end of a year-long ‘seeding’ project in which The 90-10 Institute will be coalescing thought leaders from each of the sectors in the ecosystem that are codependent on one another to finance, develop, manufacture, distribute, pay for and deliver to patients.  These innovative thinkers will be engaged in a knowledge and idea development process together, culminating in a Summit meeting in 2025 where they will be asked to draft a ‘blueprint’ for the industry system that can fill the gaps and deliver on the promise of affordability and access to all.
